Urban vs rural rates

Urban (RGP)

₹3.05–5.20/unit

Rural (RGP-Rural)

₹2.65–4.90/unit

Rural premises inside a Gram Panchayat pay lower per-unit rates across every slab, plus half the electricity duty of urban premises — the same consumption can cost meaningfully less depending on which side of the line your address falls.

Common MGVCL bill traps

MGVCL is not statewide — Ahmedabad is UGVCL

Gujarat has four separate distribution companies (MGVCL, UGVCL, PGVCL, DGVCL) under GUVNL. MGVCL covers Vadodara and central Gujarat; Ahmedabad, Surat and other cities are billed by a different company entirely.

Urban and rural rates genuinely differ

Unlike most states, Gujarat sets a lower per-unit rate and half electricity duty for rural (RGP-Rural, inside a Gram Panchayat) premises versus urban (RGP) ones — the same consumption can cost less just for being in a rural area.

FPPCA surcharge isn't included in this estimate

MGVCL adds a monthly Fuel & Power Purchase Cost Adjustment (FPPCA) that varies and is not modelled here, so your real bill will differ by that amount.

How the MGVCL bill is calculated

Urban vs rural rates (RGP vs RGP-Rural)

Gujarat sets different domestic rates for urban (RGP) and rural (RGP-Rural, inside a Gram Panchayat) premises — rural homes pay lower per-unit rates and half the electricity duty. This calculator uses the urban RGP schedule.

How the Gujarat bill is calculated

Gujarat domestic supply is billed monthly. Consumption is split across telescopic slabs from ₹3.05 to ₹5.2/unit, each band charged at its own rate. A fixed charge of a flat ₹90/month applies.

Your bill, component by component

Based on the 200-unit example above. Expand each line for what it means and whether you can influence it.

Energy chargeReducible₹742.50+

Priced across telescopic slabs — the more you use, the higher the marginal rate. Shifting usage below your next slab threshold lowers this line directly. This example totals ₹742.50.

Fuel cost adjustment (FCA)Set by DISCOM₹0.00+

A ₹0/unit pass-through surcharge that tracks the DISCOM's power-purchase cost. It applies equally to every consumer on this tariff and isn't something you can reduce by changing usage.

Fixed chargeFixed₹90.00+

Charged regardless of how many units you use (flat). The only way to change this line is to change your phase, sanctioned load, or connection type.

How to read your meter

Digital meters show a running total in kWh ("units") on an LCD display — write down the number before the decimal point. To find your consumption for a billing period, subtract your previous reading from your current reading; that is exactly what the "Meter reading" mode in the calculator above does for you. Analog meters use a set of dial gauges read left to right — note the number the pointer has just passed on each dial.

Tools that cut your bill

Swap CFL for LED bulbs

Replacing a 15W CFL with a 9W LED bulb, run 6 hrs/day, saves about ₹68.33/year at Gujarat's top slab rate (₹5.20/unit) — per bulb.

Upgrade to a 5-star AC

A 1.5 ton 5-star AC vs 3-star, run 6 hrs/day, saves about ₹2,898.55/year in Gujarat.

Tips to reduce your MGVCL bill

  • Where practical, keep usage below your next slab threshold — the marginal units above ₹5.20/unit cost the most.
  • For high-usage households, rooftop solar can offset your most expensive top-slab units — see the solar section above.

Net metering explained

Net metering lets a rooftop solar system export surplus power back to the grid through your existing meter, which runs in reverse. At billing time, your DISCOM credits the exported units against what you drew from the grid — you're billed only for the net difference. Combined with telescopic slabs, this typically offsets your most expensive units first. Estimate your solar payback →

About MGVCL

The Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) was reorganised into a generation company (GSECL), a transmission company (GETCO), and four distribution companies under a holding company, Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL). Madhya Gujarat Vij Company Ltd (MGVCL) was incorporated on 15 September 2003 and became operational on 1 April 2005.

MGVCL serves Vadodara and 12 districts of central Gujarat. The other three distribution companies — UGVCL (north Gujarat, including Ahmedabad), PGVCL (Saurashtra) and DGVCL (south Gujarat, including Surat) — cover the rest of the state.

Does MGVCL supply electricity to Ahmedabad?

No. Ahmedabad is served by Uttar Gujarat Vij Company Ltd (UGVCL), a separate GUVNL subsidiary. MGVCL's territory is Vadodara and central Gujarat — check which company's name appears on your bill before using this calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Gujarat electricity tariff telescopic?

Yes. Gujarat charges telescopically: each slab is billed at its own rate, so moving up a slab does not re-price your cheaper units.

What is the fixed charge for a Gujarat domestic connection?

The fixed charge is a flat ₹90/month.

How accurate is this Gujarat bill estimate?

It uses the published domestic slab rates and is a close estimate, not a billing-grade figure. FPPCA (monthly fuel surcharge) and electricity duty are not modelled here. Always confirm against your official MGVCL bill.

Does MGVCL supply electricity to Ahmedabad?

No. Ahmedabad falls under Uttar Gujarat Vij Company Ltd (UGVCL), not MGVCL. MGVCL covers Vadodara and 12 districts of central Gujarat (Anand, Kheda, Panchmahal, Dahod, Chhota Udaipur and others) — a different, adjacent territory.

How do I check or pay my MGVCL bill online?

Pay via the official MGVCL portal at mgvcl.com, using Quick Pay or by registering an account. For queries, call the toll-free helpline 1800-233-2670 or 19124.

What is MGVCL, and how did it form?

The Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) was reorganised by the Gujarat government into a generation company, a transmission company, and four distribution companies. Madhya Gujarat Vij Company Ltd (MGVCL) was incorporated on 15 September 2003 and became functional on 1 April 2005, as a subsidiary of the holding company Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL).
