Common PED-MZ bill traps

A single department runs generation through to your meter

Unlike states that have split generation, transmission and distribution into separate companies, Mizoram's PED handles all three as one integrated department — useful to know since a single helpline covers supply issues end-to-end.

The jump above 100 units is steep

Mizoram's rate rises from ₹4.20 to ₹6.00/unit once you cross 100 units — a roughly 43% jump on every unit beyond the first slab, larger than in many other states.

Fixed charge is a flat ₹30/month, not tied to load

Every domestic connection pays the same ₹30 fixed charge regardless of sanctioned load or phase, unlike neighbouring Tripura and Manipur, which charge per kW.

How the PED-MZ bill is calculated

A high north-eastern tariff

Mizoram’s domestic power is relatively expensive by Indian standards, starting around ₹4.20/unit. Detailed public slab data is limited, so this uses an indicative two-slab structure.

How the Mizoram bill is calculated

Mizoram domestic supply is billed monthly. Consumption is split across telescopic slabs from ₹4.2 to ₹6/unit, each band charged at its own rate. A fixed charge of a flat ₹30/month applies.

Your bill, component by component

Based on the 150-unit example above. Expand each line for what it means and whether you can influence it.

Energy chargeReducible₹720.00+

Priced across telescopic slabs — the more you use, the higher the marginal rate. Shifting usage below your next slab threshold lowers this line directly. This example totals ₹720.00.

Fuel cost adjustment (FCA)Set by DISCOM₹0.00+

A ₹0/unit pass-through surcharge that tracks the DISCOM's power-purchase cost. It applies equally to every consumer on this tariff and isn't something you can reduce by changing usage.

Fixed chargeFixed₹30.00+

Charged regardless of how many units you use (flat). The only way to change this line is to change your phase, sanctioned load, or connection type.

How to read your meter

Digital meters show a running total in kWh ("units") on an LCD display — write down the number before the decimal point. To find your consumption for a billing period, subtract your previous reading from your current reading; that is exactly what the "Meter reading" mode in the calculator above does for you. Analog meters use a set of dial gauges read left to right — note the number the pointer has just passed on each dial.

Tools that cut your bill

Swap CFL for LED bulbs

Replacing a 15W CFL with a 9W LED bulb, run 6 hrs/day, saves about ₹78.84/year at Mizoram's top slab rate (₹6.00/unit) — per bulb.

Upgrade to a 5-star AC

A 1.5 ton 5-star AC vs 3-star, run 6 hrs/day, saves about ₹3,344.48/year in Mizoram.

Tips to reduce your PED-MZ bill

  • Where practical, keep usage below your next slab threshold — the marginal units above ₹6.00/unit cost the most.
  • For high-usage households, rooftop solar can offset your most expensive top-slab units — see the solar section above.

Net metering explained

Net metering lets a rooftop solar system export surplus power back to the grid through your existing meter, which runs in reverse. At billing time, your DISCOM credits the exported units against what you drew from the grid — you're billed only for the net difference. Combined with telescopic slabs, this typically offsets your most expensive units first. Estimate your solar payback →

About PED-MZ

Before Mizoram had its own power administration, electricity generation and distribution were managed by the Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) until March 1975. The Power & Electricity Department (PED) was created that year under the State PWD's Superintending Engineer before becoming independent in the early 1980s.

PED reached full directorate-level status in 1983 with the creation of a Chief Engineer post, and an Engineer-in-Chief post was added in 2008 as head of department. PED functions as an integrated utility — generation, transmission, distribution and despatch — headquartered in Khatla, Aizawl.

Does PED-MZ supply electricity across all of Mizoram, including Aizawl?

Yes. PED is Mizoram's sole, integrated power utility, covering generation, transmission and distribution statewide from its Aizawl headquarters.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Mizoram electricity tariff telescopic?

Yes. Mizoram charges telescopically: each slab is billed at its own rate, so moving up a slab does not re-price your cheaper units.

What is the fixed charge for a Mizoram domestic connection?

The fixed charge is a flat ₹30/month.

How accurate is this Mizoram bill estimate?

It uses the published domestic slab rates and is a close estimate, not a billing-grade figure. Public slab detail is limited; the structure here is indicative and needs verification. Always confirm against your official PED-MZ bill.

Does PED-MZ supply electricity across all of Mizoram, including Aizawl?

Yes. The Power & Electricity Department is an integrated utility responsible for generation, transmission and distribution across the whole state, headquartered in Aizawl.

How do I check or pay my Mizoram PED bill online?

Pay via the official portal at power.mizoram.gov.in or powerbilling.mizoram.gov.in. For queries, call 0389-2321650, 0389-2322174 or 0389-2310169.

What is PED-MZ, and how did it form?

Mizoram's power sector was managed by the Assam State Electricity Board until March 1975, when the Power & Electricity Department (PED) was created as Mizoram gained its own administration. It reached full directorate status in 1983 with a Chief Engineer, and an Engineer-in-Chief post was added in 2008 to head the department.
