Common TSECL bill traps

The first 100 units are always free, not a one-time offer

Every domestic bill gets the first 100 units at ₹0, regardless of how much you use above that — at 150 units, only the 50 units above 100 are charged, exactly as the telescopic structure works for any other slab.

TSECL bills you, but no longer generates your power

Since 2015 and 2023, generation and transmission have been run by separate sister companies (TPGL and TPTL). TSECL is now purely the retail distribution and billing entity, though your bill still says TSECL.

The ₹0.20/unit fuel surcharge is easy to miss

On top of the slab rates, a small fuel and variable-cost adjustment of ₹0.20/unit applies to your whole consumption — it's a modest amount but not shown in the headline slab rates.

How the TSECL bill is calculated

First 100 units free

Tripura’s revised TSERC tariff makes the first 100 units completely free for domestic consumers, then charges ₹4.00 and ₹6.00/unit, with a low ₹16/kW fixed charge and a ₹0.20/unit fuel adjustment.

How the Tripura bill is calculated

Tripura domestic supply is billed monthly. Consumption is split across telescopic slabs from ₹0 to ₹6/unit, each band charged at its own rate. A fixed charge of ₹16 per kW of sanctioned load applies, plus a 5% electricity duty, and a ₹0.2/unit fuel/variable-cost surcharge.

Your bill, component by component

Based on the 150-unit example above. Expand each line for what it means and whether you can influence it.

Energy chargeReducible₹200.00+

Priced across telescopic slabs — the more you use, the higher the marginal rate. Shifting usage below your next slab threshold lowers this line directly. This example totals ₹200.00.

Fuel cost adjustment (FCA)Set by DISCOM₹30.00+

A ₹0.2/unit pass-through surcharge that tracks the DISCOM's power-purchase cost. It applies equally to every consumer on this tariff and isn't something you can reduce by changing usage.

Fixed chargeFixed₹48.00+

Charged regardless of how many units you use (₹16/kW × 3 kW). The only way to change this line is to change your phase, sanctioned load, or connection type.

Electricity dutyStatutory₹10.00+

A 5% state government levy on the energy charge — set by statute, not by the DISCOM, and not reducible by usage pattern.

How to read your meter

Digital meters show a running total in kWh ("units") on an LCD display — write down the number before the decimal point. To find your consumption for a billing period, subtract your previous reading from your current reading; that is exactly what the "Meter reading" mode in the calculator above does for you. Analog meters use a set of dial gauges read left to right — note the number the pointer has just passed on each dial.

Tools that cut your bill

Swap CFL for LED bulbs

Replacing a 15W CFL with a 9W LED bulb, run 6 hrs/day, saves about ₹85.54/year at Tripura's top slab rate (₹6.51/unit) — per bulb.

Upgrade to a 5-star AC

A 1.5 ton 5-star AC vs 3-star, run 6 hrs/day, saves about ₹3,628.76/year in Tripura.

TSECL's top domestic slab rate is ₹6.00/unit — more expensive than APDCL (₹7.60/unit), — more expensive than PED-MZ (₹6.00/unit). Billing cycles also differ: TSECL bills monthly, while APDCL bills monthly, PED-MZ bills monthly.

Tips to reduce your TSECL bill

  • Where practical, keep usage below your next slab threshold — the marginal units above ₹6.00/unit cost the most.
  • The ₹0.2/unit fuel cost adjustment applies to every unit you use, so reducing overall consumption reduces this line too — unlike the fixed charge.
  • For high-usage households, rooftop solar can offset your most expensive top-slab units — see the solar section above.

Net metering explained

Net metering lets a rooftop solar system export surplus power back to the grid through your existing meter, which runs in reverse. At billing time, your DISCOM credits the exported units against what you drew from the grid — you're billed only for the net difference. Combined with telescopic slabs, this typically offsets your most expensive units first. Estimate your solar payback →

About TSECL

Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd (TSECL) was incorporated on 9 June 2004 and commenced operations on 1 January 2005, taking over the assets and network of Tripura's erstwhile state Power Department as the UT's deemed licensee for generation, transmission and distribution.

Generation was later split into a separate company, Tripura Power Generation Ltd (TPGL), in January 2015, and transmission into Tripura Power Transmission Ltd (TPTL) on 19 January 2023 — TSECL today handles distribution and retail billing for around 9.33 lakh consumers statewide.

Does TSECL supply electricity across all of Tripura?

Yes. TSECL is the single, statewide distribution licensee for Tripura, serving roughly 9.33 lakh consumers with no regional or district-level split.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Tripura electricity tariff telescopic?

Yes. Tripura charges telescopically: each slab is billed at its own rate, so moving up a slab does not re-price your cheaper units.

What is the fixed charge for a Tripura domestic connection?

The fixed charge is ₹16 per kW of sanctioned load.

How accurate is this Tripura bill estimate?

It uses the published domestic slab rates and is a close estimate, not a billing-grade figure. Always confirm against your official TSECL bill.

Does TSECL supply electricity across all of Tripura?

Yes. TSECL is the sole distribution licensee for the entire state, serving around 9.33 lakh consumers — there is no regional split like in some neighbouring states.

How do I check or pay my TSECL bill online?

Pay via the official portal at tsecl.in or the Tripura Power mobile app. For queries, call the 24×7 toll-free helpline 1912, or the local number 0381-235-3502.

What is TSECL, and how did it form?

TSECL was incorporated on 9 June 2004 and began operations on 1 January 2005, taking over generation, transmission and distribution from Tripura's erstwhile state Power Department. Generation was later hived off into Tripura Power Generation Ltd (TPGL) in January 2015, and transmission into Tripura Power Transmission Ltd (TPTL) on 19 January 2023 — TSECL today focuses on distribution and retail supply.
